How To
How to get started gardening
Gardening is one the oldest forms. It takes patience, persistence, determination, and perseverance. It is important to choose the right location for your garden. You could choose to plant food on a large parcel of land, or in your own backyard. Next, choose what kind of plants you would like to grow. Do you prefer vegetables or flowers? Some people enjoy growing herbs and others prefer raising livestock like rabbits. Before you decide on the type of crops you want to plant, it is important to consider the space available. If your climate is cold, you may decide to plant berries and fruits.
Once you have made your choice, it is time to prepare the soil. Soil is essential in determining whether your plants will thrive or fail. High quality soil is rich in organic matter, which feeds your plants' roots. Organic matter includes things like leaves, twigs, grass clippings, manure, and compost. After you have prepared your soil you must add nutrients. Depending on the type of plants you plan to grow, you may need different amounts of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, boron, zinc, copper, manganese, iron, molybdenum, chlorine, sulfur, sodium, and so on. To determine these values, you can use a fertilizer calculator online. Many fertilizers are available, so make sure you know what you are buying.
Now you need to wait for the seeds to germinate. This process usually takes anywhere from 2 weeks to 3 months, depending on the weather and the temperature in your area. After your seeds sprout, it is important to water them frequently. Problems can arise if you water your plants too frequently or too little. Make sure to give your plants water at regular times and not overwater. Overwatering can cause root rot or fungal diseases. Keep in mind that plants are more thirsty during summer than winter. You should also remember that some plants will need to dry out once they have been watered. Tomatoes, for example, need to be kept moist but not too wet. They don't like to sit in soggy soil. After the flowers have stopped, they must go into dormancy. Dormancy occurs when plants stop producing any new growth and start to store energy for the next harvest. The plant ceases sending signals to its roots to produce food during dormancy. Plants continue to store energy throughout this period. However, if the temperatures drop below freezing and there isn't enough sunlight, the plant will go to sleep.
Urban areas can limit your choices for plants. Concrete sidewalks, roads or parking lots can block sunlight from reaching urban areas. Concrete absorbs sunlight, which prevents the soil beneath from getting enough sun exposure. Because of this lack of sunlight, many plants cannot survive in cities. However, many plants can still thrive in urban environments. Many trees, shrubs and perennials can thrive in urban environments. Many annuals can be grown indoors, too, in containers. You can grow fresh greenery year-round in containers.
You're now ready to plant after you have chosen where and what to grow in your garden.
